Happy Independence Day from StephenUncorked
A Quick Summer Wine Tip Before You Head to the BBQ
Dear Stephen,
Whether you're spending the weekend at the beach, the lake, a backyard cookout, or simply enjoying time with family and friends, I wanted to take a moment to wish you a safe and happy Fourth of July.
As temperatures climb into the 90s (and even 100°F or more in some places), I thought I'd share one of the most common wine mistakes I see during the summer.
Many people assume wine is fine as long as it isn't sitting in a hot car all day.
Unfortunately, wine can begin suffering damage much sooner than that.
Extended exposure to temperatures above 75°F accelerates aging, while temperatures above 85–90°F can permanently alter aromas, flavors, and texture.
A few easy ways to protect your bottles this weekend:
Keep wine indoors until you're ready to leave
Transport bottles in an insulated tote or cooler
Store wine in the shade whenever possible
Chill reds slightly before serving (they'll warm quickly outdoors)
Never leave wine in a parked car, even for a short event!
If you've ever seen a cork protruding from the bottle or wine leaking around the capsule, heat is usually the culprit.
